CfE Second Level explained — ages 8-12

Second Level is the third Curriculum for Excellence level. It covers P5, P6 and P7 — children aged roughly 8 to 12.

Second Level runs roughly from P5 to P7. Work gets more independent: fractions and decimals, longer writing, fair-test experiments and real research about Scotland.

How do I know if my child is at Second Level?

Children at Second Level are working with fractions, decimals and percentages, planning their own fair tests, and writing organised paragraphs rather than single sentences.

Teachers judge levels using lots of evidence over time, not one test — so ask at parents' evening if you want certainty. See all five CfE levels compared.
