CfE First Level explained — ages 5-8
First Level is the second Curriculum for Excellence level. It covers P2, P3 and P4 — children aged roughly 5 to 8.
First Level usually spans P2 to P4. Children move from counting to calculating, from letter sounds to reading whole stories, and start explaining their thinking out loud.
How do I know if my child is at First Level?
Children at First Level are adding and subtracting without counting on fingers, reading short books on their own, and writing a few linked sentences with capital letters and full stops.
Teachers judge levels using lots of evidence over time, not one test — so ask at parents' evening if you want certainty. See all five CfE levels compared.
