CfE Fourth Level explained — ages 13-15

Fourth Level is the fifth and highest Curriculum for Excellence level. It covers S2 into S3 — learners aged roughly 13 to 15.

Fourth Level is the most advanced work on the site, taking learners into S3 territory with multi-step problems, extended writing and deeper scientific reasoning.

How do I know if my child is at Fourth Level?

Learners at Fourth Level are solving multi-step problems independently, writing at length for a chosen purpose, and reasoning through science they cannot see directly.

Teachers judge levels using lots of evidence over time, not one test — so ask at parents' evening if you want certainty. See all five CfE levels compared.
