CfE Early Level explained — ages 3-6

Early Level is the first Curriculum for Excellence level. It covers nursery and P1 — children aged roughly 3 to 6.

Early Level covers nursery through to the end of P1. Learning is playful and hands-on: counting real things, spotting letter sounds, noticing the weather and asking lots of questions.

How do I know if my child is at Early Level?

Children at Early Level are counting real objects to 20, hearing and saying letter sounds, and talking about what they notice rather than writing it down.

Teachers judge levels using lots of evidence over time, not one test — so ask at parents' evening if you want certainty. See all five CfE levels compared.
